Musicians Association of South Africa
Dario Broccardo has been involved in the music industry as a teacher, performer, conductor, composer and studio owner since he completed his BMUS at WITS in 1997. He has played with some of South Africa’s finest ensembles (including the NSO, JFO, JPO, KZNPO) and has always sought to bring his experience to his many students.
At the end of 2009, Dario made the decision to move to Grahamstown, renowned for it’s annual National Arts Festival, to take full-time employment at Kingswood College and in 2011 he moved to the nearby city of Port Elizabeth where is lives now with his wife and children. He is employed as a teacher on the outreach project and principle percussionist of the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (sponsored by the National Lottery) and enjoys the privilege of being a tutor for the South African National Youth Orchestra.
Dario remembers with fondness and deep gratitude the lessons of his teachers and the opportunities that came his way with the National Symphony Orchestra (albeit that he only played in its last years). He remembers also with sadness when the NSO played it’s last concert. Since then it has been a dream of Dario’s that the music industry would one day be restored to its former glory, that musicians would once again be afforded the freedom to work and bring joy to audiences.
With so much to contribute to the almost certain death of the arts as a true and honest discipline and healthy career choice, what can anyone do to try to stop this? MASA was formed to be one such small hurdle in the way of decline… a small group of concerned and committed music professionals who were called together by a common goal. Dario felt compelled to be a part of the process and to offer his skill as an educator. It is his goal to use his talents to teach especially young and new musicians across South Africa how to make a success of their ambitions in the difficult yet immensely rewarding service of music.
